I wouldn't exactly call myself a proud Epic Pass holder.

I mean, the discoure in the snow sports world about whether Epic and Ikon are ruining the sport is completely justified.

But,  I'm delighted to have the access a ski pass grants me, especially as someone who lives between Crested Butte and Telluride.

As I've fallen gradually more in love with snowboarding, I've been spending multiple weekends in Crested Butte getting to know the mountain while trying to accommodate myself as cheaply as possible.

I'm still far from a local, so I'm alwys happy for suggestions, especially of mom-and-pops with good food around town.

But, I've been pleasantly surprised by a few things CB has to offer that make weekenders super doable. The first is the free parking in town and excellent public transit between downtown Crested Butte and the resort.

I've also stayed in Gunnison, and I was surprised and happy to find the transit authority offers free busses from Gunisson right to the moutain as well.

Both the Crested Butte Hostel in CB and Wanderlust Hostel in Gunnison have beds frequently under $100 per night (Wanderlust is a straight $36 per night), and I was impressed by the cleanliness and convenience of the CB Hostel especially.

Finally, after a long weekend of riding, almost everyone wants a beer. I learned the hard way the cheapest thing at the Umbrella Bar is $7, but Tin Cup Ice Cream serves up PBR for $1- and Jose, where there's often a DJ spinning right by the bottom of the major lifts, has it for $2.

So, if you're looking to hit CB on the cheap, that's all I can tell ya- and I always welcome suggestions.

Cheers,
Kylea from the newsroom
