It's bigger than the sports

I'm happy to write about all things Montrose, but anyone who knows me knows our weekly Outdoors section is almost always my favorite thing to work on.

That's partly because it gives me an excuse to do, and talk about, and write about a lot of super fun and exciting things.

But it's also because we can use the outdoors and the extreme sports we love to talk about bigger issues through a unique and interesting lens.

I've gotten the chance to write a few big outdoors stories in the past few weeks, which tackle major topics like worker's rights and collective bargaining and, coming this weekend, the tough state of mental health in mountain towns.

A few weekends ago, we ran a story about the Crested Butte Lift Maintanance Union's ongoing negotations with Vail, and tight squeeze mountain town and resort workers find themselves in.

I was happy to see yesterday that the union and resort had come to a tentative agreement, though further details won't be available until the contract is official.

This week, I talked to pro skier turned filmmaker Drew Petersen about another big topic: mental health.

In Saturday's paper, we'll talk about Drew's own mental health journey, as well as some of the reasons so many people in rural and resort towns struggle with mental health.

It's a heavy one, but as Drew can attest, things can get better. Hopefully, running a story like this will drum up some conversations.

Cheers,
Kylea from the newsroom
