GOP selects new commissioner

Happy Monday, y'all!

Last week, we mourned the loss of a recently elected county commissioner and longtime community servant, Rick Dunlap. Saturday, the Montrose County GOP vacancy committee convened and, after two rounds of voting, selected Sean Pond, who will be one of the few West End residents to hold the District 3 seat that includes the West End.

The selection process was by the book, party chairman Monty George said; they even brought in the state parliamentarian to oversee things. In case you were wondering, the committee selected the new commissioner in accordance with state law: Dunlap was a Republican, so it fell to that party to fill the vacancy his passing created. The general public gets a vote come 2026, the next general election. Pond could run to hold onto the seat, as can anyone else eligible to be elected in District 3.

Pond lives in Nucla and last year, led pushback efforts against talk of a national monument designation for the Dolores River Canyon. We're waiting to hear more from him about his goals as commissioner. Congratulations and welcome aboard, Sean!
