Get your cancer screenings Former President Joe Biden has an 'aggressive" form of prostate cancer, it was reported over the weekend. Prostate cancer is among the most common types, the Mayo Clinic says, and the earlier the diagnosis, the more options there are for treatment. Cancer that spreads beyond the prostate can still be treated, but it is more difficult to cure; Biden's cancer has reportedly spread to his bones. Men, be on the lookout for symptoms. These can include frequent urination, waking up to relieve yourself more often during the night, blood in the urine and blood in semen. Signs that the cancer has advanced can include exhaustion, unexplained weight loss, weakness in extremities, back pain, bone pain, erectile dysfunction and urine leakage. (All per Mayo Clinic.) Of course, these symptoms may mean something else. That is why it is important to see your doctor, instead of relying on the internet. The River Valley Family Health Centers, with locations in Montrose, Olathe and Delta, offers sliding-scale fees, and the clinic accepts all insurance. Please, if you do not have a health care provider, reach out to one if you have these symptoms. And even if you do not, keep up with your recommended screenings. Cancer touches far too many people — and that's all types. My father's cancer also started with a "P" — unfortunately, it was pancreatic cancer, and there are few early diagnostic tools available. That means by the time you are diagnosed, your cancer could be far too advanced to be cured. That was the case with my dad (Tom). He died 15 years ago, come Thursday. It is still hard to believe. Almost as bad: finding out so many others also died because of this same disease; one young woman was diagnosed at autopsy, and that is an extraordinary tragedy. My heart still breaks for her family. I don't want anyone else to fall to cancer, whether it is prostate, pancreatic, breast, lung, brain, bone, bladder, cervical … you get the picture. If it is within your means, and you have any concerns, please discuss what tests are necessary with a competent medical professional. Finally, I offer my best wishes to Joe Biden, as well as to anyone else suffering from cancer. Take care of yourself this Monday, and always. Katharhynn, from the Newsroom.
