ImageLOCAL SCHOOL SIGNALS DISTRESS (NOT REALLY): The 2020-21 school year started days ago and already schools are displaying a sign of distress — flying the American flag upside down. (Not really. It was an honest mistake, according to those in the know at the school.) But it should make you think about what teachers and students are going through this year. Take today to thank teachers and give your students a pat on the back. Also - here are some Do's and Don'ts for displaying Old Glory, according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

GOP MEET AND GREET: Rifle-area business woman Lauren Boebert, a Congressional District 3 candidate, was among several GOP candidates and representatives who spoke in Hotchkiss this past Saturday.

Running against Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush, Boebert shared her opinions on a lot of things, including the National Popular Vote Compact, an issue that will appear on the November ballot.

"When Gov. Jared Polis signed the National Popular Vote Compact, we went to work. We began to collect signatures so we can get that dangerous scheme on the ballot this November," Boebert said. "This steals our votes for president and gives them to California. It puts Colorado's resources at risk, puts Colorado's water at risk."

That's not exactly how the compact would work, but it would, if it got enough support, effectively end the Electoral College. We did a story on the debate last year. Read it here. Not a ton has changed since we wrote that, except for Colorado getting the issue on the ballot. Here's a website for those in support.

SET FOR TRIAL: Former Montrose mortician Megan Hess, former operator of Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors, and her mother Shirley Koch, will face a federal jury April 12, 2021.

The state of Colorado, upon investigating complaints, determined Sunset Mesa had been returning concrete mix and other substances to families instead of cremains, and that in at least one instance, the mortuary returned the incorrect ashes to a family, as shown by remnants of a watch and zipper the deceased wasn't wearing when he was taken for cremation.
