Community loses dedicated public servant: Katharhynn from the newsroom with unfortunately tragic news. Montrose County has lost Rick LaPena, a former law enforcement officer who worked as a fraud investigator for the county Health and Human Services. Rick passed away recently, reportedly from COVID.
I knew him through his work, specifically, with the Montrose Police Department, and, to borrow a phrase from former publisher Stephen Woody, he was truly "one of life's good guys."
Rest in peace, Rick. You are missed.
A tough loss for the home team: In a come-from-behind effort, Erie toppled Montrose by just one point in the semifinal match-up. The Saturday game finished with the Tigers one point ahead of the Indians, a heartbreak that ended the home team's state title dreams.
Coming up: The Montrose County School District is looking to move on after its former IT director, Robert "Steve" McEwin was sentenced on Monday to an agree-upon four years of supervised probation.
The agreement, which District Judge Keri Yoder accepted "reluctantly" includes a 60-day jail term (minus two days spent in jail right after his arrest last December), which McEwin began immediately. McEwin funneled many thousands of dollars of school district money to his own uses. He ultimately pleaded guilty to felony-4 theft and, in court Monday, apologized.
District Superintendent Carrie Stephenson said after the hearing that she would have liked to have seen more jail, since McEwin effectively took money out of the hands of children. And, she said, repairing the damage he caused will cost many times more than the $280,000 in restitution McEwin is paying.
Word of the day ... methysis. It sounds very academic, but it's really one for the party animals. Methysis means "drunkenness." (Words To Make You Sound Smart)
