Time to vote! Shameless plug from Katharhynn and the newsroom, reminding those who have not voted to do so.

First, it's easy! If you've received a ballot by mail, vote it and bring it in person to 320 S. First St. in Montrose to deposit it in either the 24/7 drop-box at the foot of the steps, or go inside to drop it in the ballot box. Inside, you can instead vote in person on the county's voting machines, if that's your preference.

Second, just because it's not a presidential election doesn't mean it's not important. This year, we have a contested school board race and state ballot issues.

You have until 7 p.m. Tuesday to turn in a ballot. Let's go, Montrose!

Halloween happenings, or a happening Halloween?
In downtown Montrose Saturday, Oct. 30, it was both! Families like the adorably attired folks above filled the streets, hitting up shops — where our local merchants handed out candy — or headed over to Centennial Plaza to catch a free horse-drawn carriage ride, courtesy of Y-Hitch. Also, there were costume contests and other family fun, while just down the road in Olathe, Pumpkin Chunkin' again proved squash can fly.

Holy smokes, Montrose football!
The home team did the community proud, finishing its regular season undefeated, with a hard played win against Ponderosa. The Indians head into the state tournament as the No. 1 seed in 4A.
Go, team! And congratulations to the athletes, their parents and coaches.

And also: Don't overlook the band! The Montrose High and Olathe High bands competed this weekend in state championship competitions for divisions 4A and 1A, respectively. Both schools made it to the semi-finals. Congratulations!

Word of the day ... "Maniform." Nope, it isn't a uniform a man wears. Maniform means "having the form of a hand" and derives from the Latin word for hand, "manus." By the way: "mano a mano" (Spanish, a Latinate language) means literally "hand to hand," not "man to man" — although it can refer to a conflict or competition between two people.
