Hi and hello! Cassie here with your daily newsletter. It's been a bit of a whirlwind here in the newsroom the past couple of weeks as we work to cover COVID among other news in our community, but here's a good piece of news! Remember Katie Spatafore? I covered her story about her fight to raise money for a life saving surgery at the end of September. Katie's battle with Tarlov Cyst disease is a rare one and with only two specialists in the world, the life-altering surgery is massively expensive. Good news, though! Katie raised the $31,000 necessary for the procedure, but now she needs help funding for the flights and hotel stays. The surgery will require she fly into Dallas three days prior to the procedure and stay for a few more days after for follow-up appointments. Katie is holding an all-you-can-eat fundraiser this Saturday from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at Grace Community Church. You can donate to her GoFundMe here or donate in person by contacting Katie at 719-235-7280.
Walmart is temporarily closed: Corporate reached out to me this morning to let me know that the Montrose location would be closed through 6 a.m. Thursday morning, beginning at 2 p.m. this afternoon. The closure is a company-led initiative and was not in coordination with the local health department or county. The closure will give third-party cleaning crews time to clean and sanitize the store today and for associates to restock shelves and supplies tomorrow. The spokesperson would not confirm if the store location had experienced positive cases and if cases had contributed to the closure. She did say that the home office has a team who analyzes criteria at different locations and once data reaches a certain threshold, Walmart proactively closes the store to clean and sanitize in order to get ahead of the situation. All other locations will remain open, including the Delta Walmart. You can read the full breaking news piece here.
Our mistake: Today we published another COVID update and due to a misunderstanding, I included a list of recommendations on the CDPHE website for areas in level red on the COVID dial. These recommendations are outdated and now inaccurate and should be disregarded. We deeply regret this mistake and have removed the information. Coming up: Anna Lynn Winfrey is hosting Part II of our housing series for MoTown Knows. We'll have some great guests lined up to discuss the housing insecurity issue in Montrose. Tune in Thursday at 6 p.m. and keep an eye out for our live broadcast! If you missed it, you can watch Josue Perez host Part I in our three part housing discussion series to catch up on the conversation.
It's not too late: Montrose County is hosting its annual Flu Bug shot clinic today from 3 - 7 p.m., while supplies last.
Locations: Olathe Corn Park, Montrose County Event Center and Basin Clinic.
