Good afternoon, Montrose!

I've been writing newsletters for the Daily Press for over a year, since I started on as an intern in February 2021 while I was finishing my bachelor's degree at New College of Florida.

I moved here to Montrose in June to start my first full-time reporting gig and it's been a wild almost-year. I've closely followed stories such as the mascot replacement saga, challenges to election integrity and updates to the expanding airport.

Alas, I'm writing this newsletter to you for the last time. Today is my last day at the Daily Press. Thank you to everybody in this community who welcomed me with open arms. I've learned so much about what it means to be a good reporter, but also what it means to be a Coloradan in 2022.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Memorial Day weekend!

-Anna Lynn

Verifying election security: I spent over five hours in a room adjacent to the county courthouse yesterday with election officials and members of the public who were comparing ballots from the November 2020 election with the vote tallies recorded by Dominion machines.

They didn't find anything amok in the evidence, but peppered Clerk and Recorder Tressa Guynes and her staff with all sorts of questions about other facets of election security.

Cornerstone club getting new owners: Montage International is taking over management and operations of the golf course 18 miles southwest of Montrose, my colleague Josue Perez reported.

The new owner, which is a hospitality management company based in California, is planning on debuting fully furnished cabins this summer.

The unofficial start of summer: Today is the last day of school for students in Montrose County School District. I got to spend part of my morning photographing field day at Oak Grove Elementary!

Here's a few joyful photos to start the weekend.

Good evening and hello!

I had the privilege of seeing Heather Stark's Montrose iris farm up and close this past Monday and what a joy it was.

There was so much color throughout the farm and, clearly, so much care. Stark is at the farm frequently either performing maintenance or jotting details to keep track of her thousands of irises.

Here is a picture of the two-acre farm:

I wrote a story about the farm and why it means so much to Stark. It is a great story about family and motherhood.

Stark is opening the farm for viewing on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Her daughters might have a lemonade stand so look out for that.

Also, please avoid visiting the farm outside of scheduled visit hours. The farm is behind a private residence, so we need to be mindful of that.

Hope you enjoy the weather and beautiful iris farm!

Breaking down the financials

I took a deep dive into the financials of the Montrose Urban Renewal Authority and Colorado Outdoors to get a better sense of the financial picture.

I have mentioned in my newsletters before why progress on each project holds significance. Since this project is using tax increment financing, that means tax generated from these projects will go to MURA's cash balance, which will be used to pay off the loans issued by the city.

There is some risk involved, which is highlighted in my story, and there is also some huge upside.

There are another 22 years in this process, so the project and MURA are somewhat in a holding pattern until projects start to come online.

New principals

Staff Writer Anna Lynn Winfrey took some time to interview a pair of new principles for Montrose County School District.

Eric Sanchez, the current assistant principle at Columbine Middle School, will take over as principal at the start of next school year.

He has been a part of Montrose County School District for more than a decade. Some of you might remember seeing Sanchez on the sidelines as head coach of Montrose High School girls basketball team — he had a 120-54 record across seven seasons. What a run!

The other new principal is Kirsten Bloomfield. She will start her new role at Johnson Elementary School this fall.

Bloomfield, a graudate from Parker, is leaving Sycamore Springs Elementary School in Austin, Texas.

A fun note: Bloomfield wants to create a school song once a new mascot is selected for Johnson. You're up, local student musicians!

Have a good evening.
