Hi friends and neighbors!

It's Cassie here with your hump day newsletter.

By now, some of you may have already started seeing TABOR (Taxpayer's Bill of Rights) checks arrive in your mailboxes.

The money — $750 for individual filers and $1,500 for joint filers — comes from taxes collected by the state that exceed TABOR limits. TABOR refunds happen every time the state collects above that constitutional cap, which is determined by population and inflation.

Don't fret if you don't see your check yet! State officials advise waiting until Sept. 30 before inquiring about checks. The call center's number is 303-951-4996.

With ever-rising costs, hopefully these checks can provide all of us some relief!

Debunking myths:
Humans use nearly 100% of their brains over the course of a day. Contrary to the myth that people only tap into 10% of their brain's capacity, researchers have found there are no dormant parts of the brain. Most of the brain is actually active most of the time! But it does make for some fun science fiction.

How did the myth start? Historians trace its roots as far back as 1936 when journalist Lowell Thomas wrote in Dale Carnegie's self-help book, How to Win Friends and Influence People, that "the average person develops only 10 percent of his latent mental ability."

While he referenced a 1906 essay by psychologist William James, James wrote that humans are only "making use of a small part of our possible mental and physical resources."

Faultless, a local nonprofit dedicated to prevention education on body safety, digital safety, grooming, sex trafficking, sexual assault, cyberbullying and mental health, is hosting its first youth awareness event on Saturday, Aug. 20 at the Montrose Amphitheater from 7:45 — 9:45 p.m.

The nonprofit partnered with Montrose Recreation District to host the free silent disco dance party and laser light show for all students between 14 and 18. There will also be a second dance session for adults from 9:45-10:45, completely donation-based (whatever you can afford).

Students can register at https://faultlessedu.com/ or https://bit.ly/silentdiscoyouth

As always, you can reach me at cassiek@montrosepress.com for news tips, trivia, feedback, community highlights or even just to say hi.

See you tomorrow, Montrose!
