Hi friends and neighbors! Our students across the county are wrapping up their first full week of school after returning last Thursday. I'm excited to share that you're now looking at your newest education reporter here in Montrose! I've been covering Delta County's education beat before now and I'm looking forward to keeping you in the loop here in Montrose. News tip?: Whether you're a parent, student, teacher, I'd love to hear from you! You can email me at cassiek@montrosepress.com
MCSD is short on special education teachers You may have already met Frank, our newest addition to the MDP and DCI press rooms. Frank reported that although the Montrose County School District has filled most of its licensed positions, there are gaps when it comes to special education staff, Superintendent Carrie Stephenson told the school board at its Aug. 9 meeting.
The Flex Buildings are becoming a little more...inflatable? Our top online story today is about a new inflatable products manufacturer, SFD Manufacturing, moving from Ohio and into the Colorado Outdoors complex. The incoming company is slated to move in beginning in late fall, expanding on their current Ohio location. SFD will be located adjacent to the recently opened retailer Montrose Anglers, a local fly shop and guiding service.
Look out for historic hotel photos The former Knights of Pythias building, one of Montrose's oldest downtown buildings, is breathing new life as it transforms into a boutique hotel this fall. The Knights of Pythias building, or "KP" building, located at 33 S. Cascade Ave. in historic downtown Montrose, has sat empty since a devastating fire in 2012 rendered the building uninhabitable. Beginning this November, work is expected to begin to renovate both the interior and exterior of the structure into the Rathbone Hotel, a world-class, family-friendly hotel. I'm looking forward to seeing the building tomorrow and getting some fresh photos for you all!
Looking for something to do this weekend? Check out the farmer's market this weekend, where local Ukrainian citizens will be celebrating their home country's Independence Day in the face of six months of war. There, you can meet Augusta Martyniuk (you can read my previous feature on her here) and a recently displaced family who has found shelter here with their seven-month-old son. If you get there between 10-11 a.m., you may even hear some live music! Wine and Food Festival is Saturday from 1-4 p.m. at the Montrose County Fairgrounds and Event Center. The annual event is hosted this year by the Black Canyon Boys and Girls Club. General admission is $65. Did I miss anything? Feel free to share with the community on our NABUR platform :)
As always, you can reach me at cassiek@montrosepress.com for news tips, trivia, feedback, community highlights or even just to say hi. Have a good weekend, Montrose! - Cassie
