The most fun corn can be!

If you missed Olathe's 30th annual Olathe Sweet Corn Festival you missed out!

It was this past Saturday, and downtown Olathe was buzzing. Main Street was a vibrant mash of bounce houses, people giving axe-tossing a go (not at the same location as the bounce houses!), vendors galore, and activities from face-painting, panning for gold, karaoke and Power Wheels mini car competitions, plus vintage automobiles.

And of course, there was the corn! Fresh from the field, roasted and shucked by dedicated FFA volunteers and others, for eager folks lined up for the equivalent of a block or two, virtually all day. They had it down like clockwork: Join the corn queue, proceed to the shucking, get your ears of corn, then hit the salt-and-butter booth to jazz it up to your liking.

My favorite part, though? The water hose fights, courtesy Olathe Fire Protection District. Sure it the spot on a 90-plus degree day.

— Katharhynn from the newsroom, already looking forward to corn fest 2023

West Nile virus season is upon us

Bust out the DEET. Keep your sleeves long when out at dusk, and drain standing water.

West Nile virus season is back. Last week, Delta County announced its first human case of the mosquito-borne disease. Today, Montrose County announced the first known human case here.

Most of the time, West Nile virus presents with mild symptoms such as uncomplicated fever. But it can also cause severe illness, such as encephalitis, and death. Learn how to "fight the bite" here.
