'There was water' If you love being in the water as much as I do, this past weekend was your time! It was FUNC Fest — Fun on the Uncompahgre — all day Saturday at Riverbottom Park. I got there in time to catch other people catching the waves during river surfing competitions. Plus, I dropped a couple bucks for a rubber duck to race and benefit Partners youth mentoring; enjoyed a whole lot of color (ladies on stilts!) and the hands-down best panini ever. Most of all, there was the river. Riverbottom Park is a gem, with its natural, woodland trails right in the center of town, right alongside some amenities like picnic structures, paved trails, restrooms and the new amphitheater (in neighboring Cerise, also home to the dog park). I love the river — any river and natural waterway. I've been known to body surf in the Dolores; lie about "falling into" the Dolores when I was small, and to sit in the Uncompahgre. (Yes. In the river. Not on the banks). I've even tried river surfing, although I can't even stand up on a paddleboard at present. One memorable time in our family lore, I went boating with my sister and came back soaked head to toe. "You were on a boat. How did you get wet?" my father asked. My sister gave him "a look" and replied: "There was water." Which is about the size of it. So, I'm not saying that I sat in the Uncompahgre this weekend (by Ridgway) and got soaked but, well … there was water. — Katharhynn, from the newsroom, hoping you got to enjoy some of FUNC Fest too. (This surfer competing at FUNC Fest may be slightly better at it than me.)
Speaking of water
It's not all fun and games when it's heavy rain and flooding. On Black Bear Pass this weekend, a deluge hit already saturated ground, triggering mudslides. Several vehicles were trapped on the pass and four remain where they are, as road crews work to assess what repairs are needed. Yikes! Shout out to San Miguel County Search and Rescue/Sheriff's Office. Also, the pass is closed, so whether you're walking or driving, stay off it. (Black Bear Pass on Saturday.
