A very warm winter outdoors newsletter
If y'all have been reading any of my newsletters, and no one at the office will blame you if you haven't, you'll know I absolutely love working on our outdoors coverage— and that I hate being cold.

Last week, I got to make the most of my winter furlough and ended up on a plane west to Hawaii's most populated island of Oahu. I'd actually planned to meet a good college friend in Cartagena, Colombia, but to make a long story short had to change plans while stuck in LAX due to an emergency.

So I found myself in LA without a ticket anywhere, and an American Airlines flight to Hawaii was the first fairly cheap jet to somewhere warm I could get on.

So, instead of spending a relaxing weekend on the beach, I found myself walking 20,000 steps a day exploring Honolulu, trying to surf, climbing volcanos and training jiu-jitsu. It's basically the opposite of what I had planned.

Since I didn't intend to make this trip I did 0 research before I landed at HII, but I still got to get outside, snorkel with beautiful fish and see the famous North Shore surf breaks. Which, of course, I did not surf, because I respect the ocean and value my life.

One of the highlights of the trip was the famed and popular Koko Head hike, which involes climbing almost 1,100 railroad ties— about 1,000 feet of vert— in around half a mile to reach the top of an old volcano-turned military lookout.

It was a fun accident, but it's also good to be back in the newsroom, letting y'all know all the cool things to do in and around Montrose.

Cheers,
Kylea

When you plan for Colombia and end up in Hawaii you end up with a smaller food budget, but I had to try iconic garlic shrimp on the North Shore.

The joy of music ...

Recently, I attended my daughter's winter band concert. She's learning to play the clarinet in the Centennial Middle School band.

The concert featured students of varying skill levels, from the advanced players in the jazz band to the beginners in the beginning band.

At one point during the concert, director Cameron Beauchamp spoke a bit about how fun it was to teach beginning students, watching them excitedly grow into the experience.

I thought it'd be fun to explore this thread further, maybe bring John White, the band director over at Columbine Middle School, into the conversation.

"It's really fun. To work with the kids and to be there for those first sounds," Beauchamp explained. "It's really fun to see them come along on this journey where they start making music. And you get to see their face when they play the first song and they're like, 'oh, wait, this isn't just sounds anymore, I'm actually learning how to do this, I'm actually making music.'"

Local ranching family waives grazing permits in agreement hailed as win for San Juan bighorn
Increasing backcountry use is pressing both wildlife and domestic flocks. The way local sheep rancher Ernie Etchart sees it, accepting payment to relinquish 10 of his grazing allotments in the San Juans high above the Silverton area made good business sense — even if he disagrees about the risk domestic sheep pose to Colorado bighorn.
