It's gettin' icy...
Not so much on the local roads, thankfully, but the Ouray Ice Park is gearing up for another busy season.

And, after the new year, two ice climbing festivals will give locals and climbers from all over the world a chance to meet, compete, try some new gar and have a great time.

I covered Ice Fest last year, back when I was working for another local newspaper in the area. It was, bar none, one of the coldest days of my life. By the end, I was sticking my feet so close to the fire to warm up the flames were singeing my socks.

Hot springs never felt so good.

Ice Climbing is one of Ouray's biggest winter attractions, a sport and park that has changed the city's winter economy. In the next few months, along with coverage of the coming ice fests, we will dig into how that happened— and the next frontier: making the expensive, male-dominated sport more accessible to everyone.

Look out for tomorrow's outdoors section for a preview of the upcoming festivals and, if you want to try a clinic yourself, get online an book one sooner rather than later— they sell out quick!
Cheers,
Kylea
