I hate to admit it But my days of high school sports are far behind me— far enough that I feel old. But I still remember how cool it was to pick up a local newspaper, or look at MaxPreps, and see your name in print.
It wasn't often a reporter in my small town could get out to cover games for the local paper, and we were nowhere near important enough to be in the Providence Journal.
But, seeing yourself in the box scores for making few baskets, or in an article for pinning an opponent, was such a cool feeling.
Now, I'm on the other side of that. Sports writers tackle much of our coverage, but every once in awhile i get to talk to our local athletes about their accomplishments too, and I love being able to tell the whole community how awesome they're doing.
Last weekend, we met Sadie Shea, the first Olathe volleyball player to make all-state in years. This weekend, two teens from Montrose are heading to Vegas among a select group of cowboys and cowgirls to compete for a world rodeo title.
And tomorrow, Montrose's High School Cheerleading team will compete in their one and only competition of the year— more on that in tomorrow's paper. But talking to the coach and athletes, I was impressed.
Cheer isn't as big here as it was back home, and these girls work their butts off all season on the mats while fundraising thousands of dollars to support their team just so they can compete. Let's wish them luck! Cheers, Kylea QUICK LINKS |
