A very warm winter outdoors newsletter If y'all have been reading any of my newsletters, and no one at the office will blame you if you haven't, you'll know I absolutely love working on our outdoors coverage— and that I hate being cold.
Last week, I got to make the most of my winter furlough and ended up on a plane west to Hawaii's most populated island of Oahu. I'd actually planned to meet a good college friend in Cartagena, Colombia, but to make a long story short had to change plans while stuck in LAX due to an emergency.
So I found myself in LA without a ticket anywhere, and an American Airlines flight to Hawaii was the first fairly cheap jet to somewhere warm I could get on.
So, instead of spending a relaxing weekend on the beach, I found myself walking 20,000 steps a day exploring Honolulu, trying to surf, climbing volcanos and training jiu-jitsu. It's basically the opposite of what I had planned.
Since I didn't intend to make this trip I did 0 research before I landed at HII, but I still got to get outside, snorkel with beautiful fish and see the famous North Shore surf breaks. Which, of course, I did not surf, because I respect the ocean and value my life.
One of the highlights of the trip was the famed and popular Koko Head hike, which involes climbing almost 1,100 railroad ties— about 1,000 feet of vert— in around half a mile to reach the top of an old volcano-turned military lookout.
It was a fun accident, but it's also good to be back in the newsroom, letting y'all know all the cool things to do in and around Montrose.
Cheers, Kylea Elevation gain with.a view, just like Colorado. When you plan for Colombia and end up in Hawaii you end up with a smaller food budget, but I had to try iconic garlic shrimp on the North Shore. QUICK LINKS |
