Cross-country, close to home ... It's easy to think one would have to venture outside of the immediate vicinity for some decent nordic skiing. At least up to Grand Mesa. But this week our Outdoors columnist John T. Unger reminded us that this is just not the case — there's good cross country skiing to be found right outside our backdoor. Specifically, Unger details the skiing to be had along South Rim Road near the Black Canyon Visitor Center: "Take a pair of cross-country skis, boots, and poles, whether they are old secondhand ones, or sets of brand new ones," Unger encourages. Also detailed is the Divide Road Nordic Trails: "The beauty of ponderosa pine, blue spruce, and aspen simultaneously present some protection from all but strong winds," Unger writes of the trail system. "Intriguing and compelling routes loop among the rolling low hills and flat tracks." Descriptions like that — lyrical and logistical at once — make me want to get out and hit the trails. Maybe I'll see you out there. Have a Good One, Jeremy Morrison, managing editor QUICK LINKS |
