Welcoming the wolves

The day has arrived. Colorado Parks and Wildlife just hours ago began releasing gray wolves, as required by a 2020 ballot measure to reintroduce the species here.

It's a sore spot for some on the Western Slope, where the releases are set to take place over the coming years: there are concerns about livestock and whether the state's compensation for losses will be adequate, while for others, it just doesn't sit right that the entire state voted on an issue that will primarily affect the Western Slope.

For others, though (here and elsewhere), it is a day to be celebrated. This afternoon, five wolves captured in Oregon were released in Grand County. Governor Jared Polis calls the day historic: the wolves are back since the species was extirpated here sometime in the 1940s.

You can read more details about the wolf reintro — to be done in small doses, with a population considered experimental, over a period of years — in this helpful information from CPW.
