'100 year flood' of outages hit Elevate Wednesday, interrupting internet service for thousands

Remember high school snow days?
Maybe this was a Rhode Island thing, and it was certainly a pre-zoom thing, but we used to watch the bottom of the TV all morning to see what schools were out for the day every time it snowed.

Even though I made it to the office yesterday, it still felt weirdly like one of those surprise snow days. The internet was out at our office, and probably tested the patients of many of our readers as well, so I drove home in the snow about an hour into the workday to finish my work in sweatpants on the couch.

Not quite a free day, but I was definitely glad to miss driving during the worst of the storm.

However, that little outage caused lots of problems for lots of people, and kept DMEA, and even some of our press room, staff up until the early hours of the morning to fix.

Company reps said it was the internet equivalent of a "100 year flood," so this morning I went over to DMEA/Elevate to see for myself what happened.

I had to have them explain it to me like I was 5, four the benefit of our reader's of course and not because it was a lot of tech jargin, and y'all can read about it in a lot more detail on our website, or in tomorrow's paper.

The craziest part of all of it? The outage that took down service at random times throughout the day for thousands of people took place in just about a square foot of machinery and wires.

Cheers,'
