We're down — and up

The Colorado Department of Transportation has released its annual traffic deaths report for 2023. There was a decrease of 6% in all traffic deaths compared with 20222 … but, folks, that's still 716 people who never came home to their families.

There were other decreases seen, in passenger vehicles, motorcycles, impaired driving, and unbuckled seat belts.

Unfortunately, we saw increases in pedestrian, bicycle and construction zone deaths: 133 pedestrians died, an increase of 6%; 20 bicyclists (a 33% rise) and 16 in construction zones — a 60% increase over 2022.

The news reinforces the basics: Drive with care; don't drive impaired, buckle up, and keep an eye out for those on foot or on bikes. Ditto for pedestrians and cyclists: Watch for traffic.

And overall, please stay safe. We don't like to write about people dying for any reason, let alone a preventable reason.
