Thanks for reading ...

This past week was an active one in Montrose, with the school district moving ahead with a new teaching model at some elementary schools and the city council dealing with the blowback from a previous decision to declare Montrose a non-sanctuary city, and then dealing with the blowback to a reversal of that decision.

The non-sanctuary issue is an interesting one. As City Manager Bill Bell told me, the whole non-sanctuary concept is "kind of a made up thing." That's pretty much what Mayor Barbara Bynum had been saying the whole time, calling the original move "symbolic."

Nevertheless, the non-sanctuary issue has been a hot one, evoking a lot of emotions and drawing a full house for the council's March 19 discussion on its declaration. And our coverage of this issue has also generated some heat, with accusations that our coverage has been slanted. It hasn't, but such sentiment can be par for the course sometimes.

Our publisher, Dennis Anderson, addresses this issue in a column this weekend. It's a good one, you should read it ...

Poor Journalism? Nope.

By Dennis Anderson

A community newspaper can be subject to criticism from time to time. It goes along with the territory. When we make mistakes we should own them. I know the Montrose Daily Press and Delta County Independent do and so do newspapers in our surrounding area. None of us are shy about our responsibilities. It's often said in the industry that working in journalism isn't a job, it's a lifestyle.

Thursday night while catching some of the NCAA tournament games and having a conversation with my wife I received an email. Subject line read "Libel in the 3-14-24 edition of the DCI". The relaxing evening was done. It was sent by Linda McCone who is running as a write-in candidate in the upcoming Paonia Trustees election. McCone is bent out of shape over a couple of articles written by our North Fork beat writer Frank Witowski at the DCI. The latest is the story that was published on March 14 with the headline "Paonia Board of Trustees could potentially have a married couple serving on the board together following election."

Well, the headline is accurate and so is the story ... [read more.]

Housing, growth & immigration — Montrose City Council candidates discuss the issues at LWV forum

Housing, city planning and immigration were among a handful of topics Montrose City Council candidates addressed Tuesday at a forum held by the League of Women Voters of the Uncompahgre Valley. Four candidates will vie for three seats in the April 2 election, with current District 4 Council Member Dave Frank, as well as former mayor Judy Ann Files — aiming for the council's member-at-large seat — running unopposed.
