A county manager, a ballot measure & more ... It's been a pretty busy week in Montrose, both city and county. If you've missed anything, the weekend may be a good time to dive in for some catch-up reading. In the middle of the week Montrose County announced that a new county manager had been selected. Frank Rodriguez, currently Olathe's police chief, edged out two other finalists, Matt Smith and Mark Tyner, for the job. Following his selection, Rodriguez said he was excited to get started: "I'm ready to dive in head-first." You can check out reporter Katharhynn Heidelberg's coverage of the topic here. Prior to this, the city of Montrose also made some news, when on Tuesday it approved a ballot measure that seeks to increase the city's lodging tax. If approved by voters, the lodging tax increase — paid by hoteliers and other lodging entities — would rise from .9 to 6%. While this increase is dramatic, city officials have pointed out that the increased rate would still fall beneath the state average of 6.7% Montrose city officials also moved forward — in discussion, at least — with an ordinance aimed at curbing camping on public (and private) property. While the city maintains a proposed ordinance banning such camping, which would entail financial penalties and potential jail time, targets activities rather than individuals, critics contend the measure would unfairly target and penalize the homeless population. The city will take up the issue again in October. You can read reporter Kylea Henseler's coverage of both the lodging tax and camping ban ordinance at MontrosePress.com.
