Hooray! The return of sports (photography) ...

Image

During the summer months, sports coverage more or less takes a hiatus from the pages of the Montrose Daily Press. You'll find stories about less traditional sporting pursuits — rock climbing or mountain biking or the like — but team sports largely follow the academic calendar, meaning such coverage fades momentarily in the heat of summer.

As students head back to school and teams begin their respective seasons, so too does the paper's sports coverage return. While I enjoy the stories detailing the games and narratives throughout the season, my favorite part of the return of sports coverage are the photographs. Freezing moments in time, these photos capture the essence of the games: the thrill, the agony, the celebration, the sting of defeat.

You'll be happy to know that Will Woody is back shooting photos for us this season. Will is a great photographer, and his photos have been chronicling local sports for years. If a particularly memorable shot from our pages pops into your mind, that's probably Will's.

From time to time you'll also see other local photographers you're likely familiar with featured on our sports pages. Gunnison Clamp can be found framing up his shots on the sidelines, and Joe Harold is keeping an eye on the action in Olathe.

We'd also like to introduce you to a new photographer that will be shooting some sports for us this season. Enrique Quintero has been sending in some early season shots and, I think you'll agree, they're pretty good.

Throughout the season we'll be providing game coverage online and in print, and we'll feature plenty of photos in both formats, but even so we inevitably end up with a lot of shots that don't get published, but are certainly worth checking out. For those extras, check out our social media pages — Facebook and Instagram — and enjoy.

Have a Good One,

A new Montrose High School will be on the November ballot — voters will decide if they want to fund nearly $200 million project

It was a direction the Montrose County School District Board of Education had been leaning toward for months — to build a new Montrose High School instead of continue ongoing upkeep and expansion projects on the current facility — and now voters will get to decide if they want to fund the project.

Red Hawks lay foundation in opening games — Abby Siegel, enjoying an errorless early season, leads team in batting average, RBIs

Building a foundation is a crucial task for the Montrose softball team this season, but not at the expense of playing with a competitive fire and trying to accomplish big things for the program this year.
The Red Hawks have put together some strong performances in the young 2024 season, and although not all of them have resulted in wins, there are plenty of positives to take away from the early slate of games.
