Hit the trails (and help the trails) ...

It's a great time of year to get on your bike or put on your hiking boots and get out there and enjoy the many trails around the region. When you're out there, perhaps take a moment to consider the work that goes into maintaining all these trails — and then maybe consider helping to maintain some trails yourself.

The Ouray Trail Group provides numerous opportunities to join other volunteers in helping to maintain local trails. This Saturday, June 7, the group is hosting a Community Work Day in conjunction with National Trails Day. This year, volunteers will work on improving the Uncompahgre Riverwalk, and will receive a free lunch for their effort. You can learn more about the OTG and this weekend's volunteering opportunity in Kylea's story: Hit the trails to help the trails.

Young volunteer firefighter injured in freak accident at engulfed house; Crawford Fire Department Auxiliary raises funds

Crawford resident Brylan Cotten is not your typical 17-year-old. The senior homeschooler, a seventh generation of the local Cotten family, owns his own excavation business, BC Solutions, enjoys cowboying and taking care of his 1,400-pound steer and is a volunteer member of the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department. Brylan was seriously injured in a freak accident when he was working with the fire department on the morning of May 22, and he required emergency surgery.
