I'm not always sure how to fill the outdoors page during the shoulder season I feel like people don't want to hear about summer activities right before they put the gear away, but they may not be quite ready to read about winter sports either. But, I'm ready to write about them, and it's about time to start lining up winter coverage. And, I had two great calls this week about exciting developments for the coming season and the future. Yesterday I chatted with Peter over at the Ouray Ice Park, and when the farmers turn the taps on, we'll get together a season preview including info on the park's plans to secure a water source so they can farm great ice in the Uncompahgre Gorge for years to come. Speaking of the Gorge, the annual Love Your Gorgeolunteer event is this Saturday, and it's a great way to support the park before the season gets going. Then today, I spoke to staff at Powderhorn about a handful of improvements planned for the next few years. The mountain's lodge will look a little different by the time skiers and riders roll up this winter, as the rental shop will be moved closer to the ski school and a new cafe will take its place. Perhaps a bigger deal, the mountain is replacing the West End chairlift, and we could see a faster lift in there by next winter pending Forest Service approvals. Word on the street is it will cut the nearly-15 minute lift ride in half, and even have a safety bar. Fancy. That call was actually a great reminder to renew my pass before the price increase Oct. 13. And if Powderhorn is your mountain, this is your reminder too. Cheers, Kylea |
