How partisan is a school board? | From the Newsroom

Shameless appeal

Whew! How this year has flown. Just an eye-blink ago, I was dunking myself in the reservoir on a broiling July day and now, Thanksgiving is upon us in mere weeks, with Christmas knocking on the door. (In case you doubt, go to just about any retail store, where Christmas candy and decor are already on the shelves.)

My favorite Thanksgiving Day tradition is, in all honesty, covering the annual free Thanksgiving meal that Montrose Community Dinners puts on at Friendship Hall. They're now getting ready to  serve up the 31st one, noon - 3 on Thanksgiving.

This is a mighty undertaking, at the hands of around 300 or more volunteers, who work the dinner and/or the prep and cleanup. The board, however, works year-round, really ramping up in October and the three weeks of November before the big day. Every one of the dinners the board has hosted requires money to go with the elbow grease, and this year, the board is expecting to feed even more than the 3,400 last year, which cost $29,000.

If you are one of the many donors (or volunteers), thank you, thank you, thank you. Your contribution may be in dollars and cents, or sweat equity, but it is priceless. If you can find it in your heart to give again, please visit montrosecommunitydinners.com, or mail a check to Montrose Community Dinners, P.O. Box 3540, Montrose, CO, 81402. If you need a Thanksgiving meal (or two, or 10) delivered, call 970-318-6724 (English) or 970-318-6759 (Spanish) by Nov. 26.

And speaking of Christmas ... the dinner board also took on Montrose Christmas Dinners for older, home-bound adults. You can find out more about both of these ventures on the website.

No undertaking like this is the result of one person's efforts, but there are stalwarts, and Kevin Kuns was, for the past several years, very much the face of the Thanksgiving dinner. Kevin passed away in early September, and that will make this coming dinner bittersweet for me. I do think, though, that he would want us all to come together, break bread, and be happy. So I'm hoping the community can again come together and provide the funding and labor this meal needs — not just for Kevin, but for our friends and neighbors.

It may be difficult to tell sometimes, but school board elections are non-partisan affairs. In an official sense, it is not a political position. Candidates for school board seats do not have an "R" or a "D" beside their name…

Solar friends, foes weigh in on proposed regs; commissioner quizzes affiliation of speakers he deems to be part of the 'solar lobby'
Montrose County commissioners on Thursday heard members of the public again plead with them not to establish power-generation regs that would effectively scotch utility-scale solar, but also took an earful from three Olathe-area farmers who wanted firm regulations to protect…
