WATCH OUT FOR THOSE WHO RIDE: Motorcycle deaths are up 24% despite lower traffic volume, CDOT reported on May 7, 2020. July 10 is National Motorcycle Day and serves as a reminder for everyone to watch out as we return to Colorado roads this summer.

Motorcyclist fatality statistics:
  • In 2019, 103 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roads (17% of all roadway deaths that year)
  • Motorcycles comprise 3% of vehicles on the road
  • 2016 had the highest number of motorcycle fatalities at 125 motorcyclists
CDOT reminds drivers to use extra caution to avoid colliding with a motorcycle.
  • Allow extra space when following a motorcycle
  • Allow motorcycles the full width of a lane at all times
  • Use extra caution when turning, changing lanes or merging with traffic
  • Never drive distracted or impaired

LOCAL FAMILY FEARS COVER-UP in their son's fatal shooting in Carlsbad Caverns. The family is pushing the National Park Service for accountability, after a ranger fatally shot their son during a March traffic stop. Montrose native Charles "Gage" Lorentz was 25.
The ranger's body camera shut off for about 26 seconds during the counter, which ended with Lorentz being shot twice.

A DEVELOPER CLEARED one hurdle for building a senior living community, when Montrose City Council approved the annexation of the Hilltop Addition on first reading.
