AFTER FOUR DECADES OF HELPING ANIMALS, Bettye Hooley is retiring and closing Morningstar Veterinary Clinic.
"It was not an easy decision to come to," she said, telling of an "emotional rollercoaster."
Her hope had been to announce her retirement at a block party, at which she also planned to introduce her replacement. That practitioner, however, moved to the Front Range and another vet wanting to take over Morningstar could not be found.

SOMETHING SWEET:
Are you in the mood for a cookie and need a reason to eat one? Today, July 9, is National Sugar Cookie Day, so go ahead and satisfy your sweet tooth.
While sugar is part of the cookie's name, it's responsible for much more than that.
  • Sugar is a necessity in the batter, but it's also helpful to have for decorating. Sanding sugar is a common topper for sugar cookies, creating crystals that reflect light and give the cookies a shiny appearance.
  • Most recipes call for different types of sugar with the quantity of light brown or dark brown sugar contributing to the cookies' finished color.

ON THE NOVEMBER BALLOT: Montrose City Council discussed the ballot question for renewal of the DMEA franchise agreement during the July 6 work session, which "governs the sale of electricity to DMEA's members within Montrose city limits."
The current agreement was voted on in 2001 and will expire in April of next year. Renewal of an existing franchise agreement or establishment of a new one must be approved by Montrose voters. The process is currently in the initial stages, and once authorized to be on the Nov. 3 ballot, the agreement will be reviewed by city council before going to voters.
