Beloved family-run Hotchkiss peach farm offering tree adoptions: After a surprise freeze last October killed many of the peach trees at the Ela family's farm, they are offering loyal customers from around the county the opportunity to "adopt" future trees.

"Every day I am out in the orchard right now, I just am sad. It is very hard to see so much devastation. And, it is very hard to express the feelings since this is our livelihood," Steve Ela said to the Colorado Sun. "I can only guess, but when hurricanes and floods roll through areas and take away peoples' businesses and homes, it must feel similar."

Despite a recent blip into freezing-cold temperatures, this year's peach crop in Palisade is still expected to be fruitful. Last year, a devastating freeze in mid-April wiped out most of the crop and forced farmers to start from scratch. Peach farmers on the Western Slope lost approximately 90% of the expected harvest.

New charges filed against King Soopers shooter: Prosecutors in Boulder have filed 43 additional charges against the 22-year-old man who allegedly shot and killed 10 people inside a King Soopers in Boulder, CO on March 22.

Prosecutors added 10 new charges for the shooter's high-capacity magazine, which were banned in the state after a gunman killed 12 people at a midnight movie in Aurora in 2012. Magazines holding over 15 rounds are still available at gun shops across the state.

The Boulder shooter legally purchased a semi-automatic Ruger AR-556 six days before the tragedy.

The other new charges involve additional attempted murder against 32 people, as well as one count of first-degree assault against a woman who suffered serious injuries.

Endangered bird's critical habitat expanded: The US Fish and Wildlife Service announced yesterday the expansion of the critical habitat area for western yellow-billed cuckoos.

The bird was first listed as threatened in 2014. The birds used to be all over the Western US, but their habitat has shrunk significantly in recent decades. Yellow-billed cuckoos raise their young along rivers during the summer before traveling to South America for the warmer winters.

Now, parts of the northern fork of the Gunnison river in Delta County and the Colorado River near Grand Junction are officially designated as their critical habitat. Nearly 300,000 acres along riverbanks in other states in the west, such as California, Arizona and New Mexico, are also included.
