I'm loving the rain.

Cassie from the newsroom here, thinking back when I first moved to Montrose just over two years ago. A memory popped up in my photos and around this time two years ago, the weather was around 55 degrees! I was flabbergasted at the time - Texans can only dream of that weather in August/September. Sadly, underlying climate trends point to warmer Septembers and autumns overall.

On the short-term (and some good news), we're seeing some cooler and rainier weather this week. Leaving last night's school district board meeting, I could smell autumn in the air (or maybe it's wishful thinking).

Let's get to some news, shall we?

Do you know the Brown family?

If you've gone to school in MCSD within the past (nearly) 30 years, you've probably met Scot (Olathe principle) and Toni (Montrose resource director, pictured above) Brown. Now their daughters, Madison Young (pictured with her mom) and Taylor Brown have picked up the family torch. I can't wait to share this family's story with you!

Madison (first grade teacher) and Taylor (special education teacher/Special Olympics coach at MHS) are two years into their teaching careers now and continue to light up their classrooms.

School board meeting highlights:
  • Board members interviewed one of the two interested candidates for the vacant board position. One candidate was unable to attend the work session yesterday afternoon due to a personal emergency, but Eric (last name unknown for now) answered all 10 of the board's questions. Members were split on appointing Eric during the subsequent meeting but decided to wait until the next work session in two weeks so the other party could have her chance at an interview. The appointed individual will represent the Olathe community.
  • Enrollment update: 6,043 students are enrolled as of yesterday, but keep in mind this number is in flux until the official October count.
  • Finance Director Emily Imus informed school board members that she's closed the district's Wells Fargo accounts due to rising fees. In its stead, she's opened accounts with Alpine Bank.

See you tomorrow, Montrose!
