I don't know how I would cope as a parent in this current environment. It was only four years ago when my youngest graduated high school but it feels like the world has changed so much in that short time. I have three children now adults. They graduated Delta High School in 2005, 2011 and 2018. While we dealt with typical high school drama, and some partying situations, we didn't have to navigate school shooter hoaxes or threats or drugs like fentanyl brought to school. What we're seeing in the headlines nationally is not unreasonable to believe it could happen here or that it is happening. In Bakersfield California this month a school supervisor was hospitalized after coming into contact with fentanyl pills disguised as Percocet. In a story posted on the Guardian website, a 15 year old girl at a Hollywood high school died on Sept 15 after taking counterfeit pills filled with fentanyl. But let's not kid ourselves that this is a California or big city issue. In Delta, the Delta Police Department, the Voices For Awareness Foundation, and Lyndall Young of Western Colorado Area Health Center hosted an event to discuss fentanyl. For Delta PD Community Policing Coordinator Mindy Brennan the subject is personal. Her younger brother died in April of 2019 from fentanyl poisoning. Eye opening information was shared including the fact that the drug isn't purchased on street corners or dark alleys but delivered to homes from purchases on social media. Give the DCI story a read. They also shared a 21 minute documentary titled Dead on Arrival. Click here to view it on YouTube. Take care of each other out there, Dennis QUICK LINKS |
