Hey there,

An early Happy Labor Day to you all as we welcome in September. Hopefully everyone can take a much-needed rest for the holiday!

A little fun fact from history for you today: On Sept. 1, 1897, the Boston subway opened, making it the country's first underground rapid transit system. Flash forward to 1982 and the United States Air Force Space Command was founded!

As we usher in the weekend, here's a few things to keep on your radar:

For parents: Universal free meals are ending at MCSD and the district is pushing for more applicants for its free and reduced meals program
  • Free meals end for students next Tuesday, so any parent who needs help covering the cost of school meals is encouraged to fill out the form!
  • The form asks for information about income and household size that will be used to determine eligibility. The form also asks for the last four digits of a Social Security number, but that is not required to receive assistance.
  • You have until Oct. 1 to submit applications, but it's encouraged to get them in as soon as possible.
Community-wide: There's so far slim details on a recent prostitution arrest
  • Police and FBI agents on Tuesday arrested a Montrose woman on allegations of prostitution and keeping a house of prostitution.
  • Formal charges are pending against Hua Yang, 57, who was released on a personal recognizance bond after being booked on suspicion of the misdemeanor offenses. Her arrest affidavit was not immediately available and court files did not list an attorney for her.
Football fans: The Montrose Red Hawks opened their 2022 football season with a 35-28 loss to the Palmer Ridge Bears at the Montrose stadium witnessed by a standing room crowd.

It may have been a disappointing outcome for the season opener, but the support and energy from the crowd was pretty inspiring - even in the rain!

Have a good weekend, Montrose!
