Happy Hispanic Heritage Month! We're actually halfway through the month - interestingly, Hispanic Heritage Month begins Sept. 15 and ends Oct. 15. The timing may seem unorthodox, but there's good reason for it. The dates coincide with five Hispanic countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua) that declared independence from Spain on Sept. 15, 1821.
It's been amazing learning more about the diverse cultures within Hispanic heritage (including my own as I've reconnected with my heritage). If you had the chance to attend Montrose's first Culture Fest last weekend (thrown by Hispanic Affairs Project and hosted by the Ute Indian Museum), you likely saw the vibrant colors, food and music firsthand! Pictured are two young dancers from the Ka're Folkloric Dance group performing outside the Ute Indian Museum. Scholarship alert: Colorado high school seniors can apply to become a 2023 Daniels Scholar and receive up to $100,000 towards their college degree. Interested students can apply here by 4 p.m. MST on Oct. 15 to be considered for the scholarship. The Daniels Scholarship Program provides the opportunity for students to attend the college of their choice. The scholarship, based on financial need, provides up to $100,000 to attend any two- or four-year nonprofit, accredited college or university in the United States. Earlier this year, the Daniels Fund awarded scholarships to 226 Daniels Scholars – including 130 from Colorado. Have a great weekend!
