School board elections: Part II | From the Newsroom

It's hot...obviously, now grab your sunscreen

I'm going to state the obvious: it's hot.

Looking at the UV index right now (it's 4:30 p.m.), we're sitting at a moderate 4.2 on the index scale. Just earlier at around 1 p.m., however, those UV rays peaked at a high 9.2, a trend we'll be seeing over the next week.

All that to say, here's your (and my) friendly reminder to grab your sunscreen. Dermatologists encourage us to reapply it every two hours, not just once a day. We're trying to avoid skin cancer here, especially living at higher altitudes.

Remember:
  • Reapply every two hours
  • Don't neglect your neck/chest, ears and the back of your hands
  • ALL skin types need sunscreen protection, no exceptions
  • Tanning is a sign of skin damage: I know, this is sad news for some of us, but there's really no such thing as a safe tan.
Now let's get to some news!

MCSD board is due for a new member:

As you're no doubt aware, the school board underwent a contentious election last year that eventually placed Alice Murphy on the board in addition to four re-elected members.

One of those re-elected members was Jeff Bachman, who was first elected to the board in 2017 to represent District A (most of the town of Olathe and the northwest corner of the school district boundaries).

Jeff resigned from the board in June, citing that his relocation out of the district violates board policy, leaving an open seat on the board. For now, board members appointed Eric Kelley, District F, to fill Jeff's seat as vice president.

The board is meeting an hour before its regular 6:30 p.m. meeting next Tuesday to interview two applicants. Potentially, one of those applicants could be our next board member.

Full story coming soon.

See you tomorrow, Montrose!

- Cassie
