| | Rollin' on our river I love the river, you love the river — everybody loves the river! The Uncompahgre never disappoints, especially in the heat of summer. Sunday, I was lucky enough to tag along with folks from Friends of the River Uncompahgre, on an unofficial float from the Chipeta put-in to the take-out just past Taviwach. As an added bonus, I managed to stay in the boat, but got a good lungful of cold water as we bounced through the Water Sports Park. (No complaints; I like getting soaked.) It was a learning adventure, too. You often hear of the river's many uses, and if you spend any time on it, you will see what I did: people in boats and duckies; surfers, waders, fishing, and plenty of families letting little ones dip a toe in. The river is also critical to the ecosystem, including natural filtration where one of the largest commercial developments in town empties into a drainage. Cottonwoods cast important shade to keep water temperatures down enough for fish to thrive; vegetation provides food, forage and habitat for birds and wildlife. And For-U puts in the elbow grease, with others, to remove invasive plants like Russian olive and tamarisk, helping to keep the river corridor thriving. The group is also contributing vital voices to ongoing development on private property along both banks. You can learn more about For-U (and how to help your river!) by visiting foru-montrose.org — Katharhynn, from the Newsroom, wishing you a happy Monday. (Here's John Unger, doing work on the river, courtesy For-U. No photos of me getting drenched at the Water Sports Park — I did not trust myself not to drop the camera!)
