What's good around here? Anyone who knows me knows I love to eat, and there's plenty of that to do around here. These past few weeks, I haven't been super busy and got to spend some time just hanging out in and around town, trying out local places with friends and enjoying the food and views before it gets cold and I get too miserable to enjoy drinking a nice glass of wine outside in a vineyard.
A couple of places I've been to recently stood out, and since I never really know what to put in these newsletters, let's talk about them.
Just a few hours ago, I stopped by Taqueria Calvillo here in Montrose for the first time. The Mexican food truck at 441 N Townshend serves dishes like tacos, burritos and quesadillas for a pretty good price, and they're pretty great. I didn't even know what a "gordita" was until today, but they looked delicious so I had to grab two. Turns out it's basically round, stuffed masa. Absolutely fantastic (the carne asada was my favorite). While it was more of a hike, I was also in a wine mood last weekend (maybe two weekends ago?) and made a last-minute decision with a buddy to hit up the Storm Cellar in Hotchkiss– which, we didn't realize at the time, is a crazy-decorated winery that's won tons of awards. We strolled in off the street for a tasting, and there was seriously medals hanging off of almost every bottle in the shop. Our timing ended up being perfect, because we got there just as Chef Brandt Bishop was setting up to cook some east asian cuisine as part of a bi-weekly small plates series the winery holds all summer and into the fall. We got seconds of everything we tried, and the view and Rose was delightful. That's all for now, but we'll keep y'all up to date on what's going on in Montrose– and other local businesses we see doing cool stuff. Cheers, Kylea from the newsroom kyleah@montrosepress.com of course I'm a rose girl Gorditas from Taqueira Calvillo made me very happy today
