| | New height-for me at least I set out for the front range this weekend to climb my first 14er, and also to compete in jiu-jitsu and eat some tacos. Well, some of these things went according to plan. We stopped for tacos Saturday night at Otra Vez Cantina in Denver, and it was one of those places where literally everything they put on the table, from the salsa to the margs, was excellent. But our luck ran out Sunday morning on the way to Mount Evans, which we had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. to climb– or so we thought. After driving about 40 minutes off the highway down a county road, we tried to turn onto the road to the trailhead only to be greeted by road workers informing us the road was closed...not like there was any signage before we drove 40 minutes out of our way. Faced with a defeated drive back to the Western Slope, we set our sights on a 13er just off the highway, what I called our "consolation hike"– Mount Sniktau. It was still the highest I've ever climbed, and it was awesome- we got 360-degree views from the top in all directions for a fairly easy 3.5ish mile round trip. I was exhausted that morning, and suffered the heartbreak of a false summit, but it was still a pretty cool, unexpected adventure. When I finally do summit my first 14er, I'll let y'all know.
