Game time ...

With the start of the school year comes school sports. It's fall, so that means football, and also softball, soccer, volleyball and cross country.

With the return of school sports comes the Montrose Daily Press's coverage of local sports — the telling of the season's stories, of the victories and defeats, the nail-biters and the runaways, the trajectories of particular teams or players.

If you'd like to dig into stories previewing this season, take a look at our sports pages online. You may also enjoy catching up on how Montrose High School's varsity football team is doing thus far, or find out why Olathe High School isn't fielding a varsity football team.

Olathe benches varsity football program — for now

Heading into the 2023 season, Head Coach Tyler Vincent, Athletic Director Darren Sofka and the other football and school staff at Olathe made a tough decision: eliminating the school's varsity football team and maintaining a junior varsity-only program for the year.

Sphinx moths causing a buzz among gardeners

I've discovered there's a real love hate relationship when it comes to sphinx moths, or sometimes more affectionately referred to as hummingbird moths. It seems to me that most people either love them or hate them. So let me explain and you can decide which camp you might be in.

Ridgway fish deemed safe to eat

To address concerns of anglers, Colorado Parks and Wildlife recently submitted fish from Ridgway Reservoir and the San Miguel River to be analyzed for metal contaminations. The results showed fish from these bodies of water are safe to eat as long as people follow statewide fish consumption guidelines.
