Riding the valley
Earlier this year we ran a guide to mountain biking in the Grand Valley, and unfortunately due to an unpleasant tailbone injury I couldn't exactly "research" the article the way I would have liked to.

But, in the past few months since I've healed I've made some time to hit the trails in and around Grand Junction. Thanks to my conversations with the locals, I knew exactly where to go, but I found some of my own spots too.

I'm not a great mountain biker– since I learned more about the other trail systems, I've basically ditched the Lunch Loops due to how technical they are. They're totally gorgeous trails– they're just a little much for me.

Over in Fruita, the 18 Road trails promise long, fun downhill runs that I had a blast riding– just be ready to pay for them physically. It takes a climb up an ascending trail or dirt road to reach most of the downhill trailheads, and we were definitely sweating by the end of it. You can park at the top– but you'll still have to get back to your car.

Meanwhile in Loma, Rustlers, part of the Kokopelli network, was one of the most well-constructed beginner trails I've ever seen, with beautiful views of the Colorado River. It even has signs posted along the route with tips and tricks on how to navigate certain obstacles, and the other trails in the system promised similar cool views and tougher terrain.

Finally, last week my dad came to town and wanted to ride, and picked something called the "Old Spanish Trail" that he wanted to try. I'd never heard of it, but it starts right in town and, when merged with the "Gunnison Bluffs Trail," can form a roughly 8 or 12.5 mile loop depending how you ride it.

A trail map is easy to find on the internet, and it was an awesome mix of climbs and descents which for about half the trail ran right along the river. I believe it's open to dirt bikes too, but I'd still totally recommend the trail.

Cheers,
Kylea
