Turkey and football ...

This holiday weekend, there are two types of birds being celebrated in Montrose: turkeys, and also Red Hawks.

On Thursday, there will of course be Thanksgiving turkey to enjoy. After that, it's all about the Montrose High School Red Hawks, who are heading towards a Class 4A semifinal matchup against Erie on Saturday.

The MHS football team takes off for the game on Friday morning, looking ahead to a 1 p.m. kickoff time Saturday. The matchup is kind of a big deal — involving multi-year narratives and a mixed record — and the winner will advance to the finals Dec. 2. This game also represents the Red Hawks last crack at the Tigers, as Erie will be advancing to 5A next year.

If you're looking for some pregame reading, check out Mike Robuck's preview of this weekend's game, as well as an account of last Saturday's quarterfinals game against Windsor, or maybe you'd rather dig into the Sept. 9 matchup against these rival teams when they faced off earlier this season in Montrose.

Up in Delta, the Panthers head to Grand Junction to play the Rifle Bears. You can read about that matchup over at the Delta County Independent.

Happy Thanksgiving, enjoy the turkey and the games this weekend. And give thanks for all that you're thankful for!

Have a Good One,

Jeremy Morrison,
managing editor

Writer on the Range: Live rough and know the real world
Guides in the outdoor industry inevitably come up with collective nicknames for customers. On horseback they're "dudes," on the river they're "mers" — short for customers — and they're "sticks" if you're trying to trick a trout. Sometimes the terms trend a little negative — "flatlander" comes to mind, and there's another name I've come to use but need to explain it.
