Close enough to taste

Are you ready? It's hard to imagine that it's already Thanksgiving time — where did the year go! — but we're just a few days away.

My Thanksgiving tradition is attending and covering the annual Thanksgiving Day dinner, put on for free each year by dedicated volunteers and generous donors. This year, board member Kevin Kuns and chef Holly Padilla tell me they're anticipating serving 3,000 meals, and have planned accordingly. Now, that's a lot of turkey! (165 birds, to be exact.)

Dinner is served at Friendship Hall (county fairgrounds on North Second Street) from noon - 3 p.m. Thursday. There is no admission fee or income requirement. Just come and enjoy!

I am thankful for volunteers who give up their own holidays to make things brighter for others. There are many — for the meal, between 200 and 400 people step up each year, and that's just at Thanksgiving. We are not a perfect community, but we are blessed by people who are consistently generous with their time, their money, or their in-kind help.

If that's you — no matter where and when you volunteer/contribute — thank you. I am very grateful for you.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

— Katharhynn, from the Newsroom
