Extra, extra ...

Perhaps you noticed a particularly solid sounding thump when your print edition of today's Montrose Daily Press hit the proverbial doorstep. There's a lot of news. And sometimes the news can be heavy. But it's also got plenty of other stuff, like business coverage, as well as our art and entertainment coverage — and that adds to the thump on the doorstep or kitchen table as well.

This is the new, twice-a-week incarnation of the Montrose Daily Press. Starting this morning, the paper is publishing on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Don't worry, there won't be less news — all the news will simply be packaged in two editions. This move will allow us to offer our readers two jam-packed print editions each week — jammed with local and state news, the arts, sports, comics and everything else you enjoy as you flip through the paper's pages, as well as some new offerings — and, of course, you can continue to read the community's news on a daily basis as we increasingly focus our energies on our digital presence.

I hope you enjoy today's paper as much as we enjoyed putting it together. And wait'll you see our Saturday edition!

Have a Good One,

Jeremy Morrison,
managing editor

P.S. Also, want to give everyone a heads-up about a film screening the Montrose Daily Press is hosting — the 5 Point Adventure Film Festival On the Road is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 24 at The Temple in downtown Montrose. To learn more, check it out at the link below.

With a win over Pueblo, Red Hawks next face Cyclones in state tournament

Starting Tuesday, the stakes got much hire for each basketball game played throughout Colorado and the Montrose girls hoops team looked more than up for the challenge. In the first round of the Class 5A state tournament, the No. 7 Red Hawks cruised to a 54-17 win over Pueblo County. Coming away from the win, it felt like the ideal way to start a tournament run that hopefully ends in the Denver Coliseum.

To boost water conservation, county incentivizes turf replacement with grant program

It's no secret that water is in short supply, or that much of Colorado remains in long-term drought. Montrose County and other partners can't make it rain more, but they can offer incentives to save water on the front end, in the form of small grants for water-friendly landscaping. Montrose County's Turf Replacement Program is accepting applications for partial project funding until March 1. The program will reimburse successful applicants for up to $2,000 in project costs and as much as $2 per square foot to replace turf.

Still House String Band mixes traditional tunes with 'Palisade Partygrass'

Plenty of Bluegrass classics revolve around tried-and-true themes like breakups and hard times, but the Palisade-based Still House Spring Band likes to mix these in with jam band-style originals and bluegrass renditions of songs like Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" to keep their live shows high-energy. Banjo player and songwriter Clinton Knorpp calls the group's style "Palisade Partygrass," and they'll play it for their first Montrose audience at Bluecron this Friday night.
