Amazing talent — right here in town I hope you didn't miss the story of Li Gomez, the first Montrose High School string player to make the Colorado All-State Orchestra. If you didn't see it, check it out here. All I can say is, "Wow!" This accomplished young woman made the cut despite there not being a string program in the school district. Instead, through the Valley Youth Orchestra and Valley Symphony Association, Li received mentorship, support and opportunity. She then coupled that with years of hard work developing her natural talent. We are lucky to have so many young people in this community who continue to do us proud — and also lucky to have so many organizations that promote music and the arts, such as the orchestra, symphony, Magic Circle Theatre and Montrose Center for Arts. On top of that, there are so many local venues that proudly host bands, events, classes, dance academies, and exhibitions — along with the talent that plays, teaches and presents at those venues. Coming up Feb. 10, you can even watch talented teenagers vie for top honors at Montrose's Got Talent. And help out the Montrose Education Foundation at the same time! The show is at 2 p.m., Montrose Pavilion. Thank you to everyone who has added to the artistic richness of this community. And congratulations, Li! — Katharhynn, from the newsroom (Li Gomez/Courtesy photo)
Smackdown! (With a purpose)
Commissioner Sue Hansen takes a whack at the wall in the historic county courthouse. You've heard of "golden shovels" for groundbreaking, but on Monday, the county offered "golden sledgehammers" for demolition. It's all part of a years-long aim to renovate and preserve the historic building. Where Hansen is smacking the wall will one day be the new elevator shaft in the roughly 100-year-old building. As was the case a century ago, commissioners are trying to keep the work and supplies as local as possible. (Katharhynn Heidelberg/Montrose Daily Press) QUICK LINKS |
