Dinner at the crossroads, or digesting Montrose's commercial kitchen grant program ... Hungry? Where do you wanna eat? It can be a tough question sometimes — at least that's what people tell Montrose Mayor Barbara Bynum. This week, the Montrose City Council began discussing a new commercial kitchen grant request. The city has granted previous such grants and this recent one is for a proposed pair of restaurants aimed for the old Daily Bread site at 346 E. Main St. downtown. This most recent grant request — for an amount of $297,146 — spurred a bit of a discussion about the city's role in spurring the development of local restaurants. Citing the city's need for additional restaurants, as well as the fact that city-funded upgrades were property specific, and would remain once a particular business moved on, Mayor Bynum came out strong in support of this effort. "When a private developer, restauranteur with extensive knowledge and background in the industry is willing to make a substantial investment in our community and the city can be part of that and be a catalyst for making that happen — I'm really excited about it," the mayor said. "I think it meets not only the quality of life questions that people are bringing to me, but also is a good return on investment because our city revenue is driven by sales tax and by excise tax and restaurants do an excellent job of bringing that into our community." You can read about this municipal discussion — as well as the proposed new restaurants, a Stockmen's revival and a collective called Ruby June — in tomorrow's print edition, or online right now.
