Backcountry tragedy

Sunday ended tragically in Gunnison County, where a man skiing with three others east of Ohio Peak was caught and killed in an avalanche.

Details are slim right now, but this is another man who set out with plans for the day, and never came home. We grieve for his family and friends, including his ski companions who dug him out of the snow and attempted to save him.

Just last month, an avalanche also claimed a beloved Ophir outdoorsman, Dr. Peter Harrelson. The doctor was highly skilled in the backcountry, and had headed out for a day on his snowboard. It is thought he inadvertently triggered a soft-slab avalanche, which swept him through a nearly treeless gully and deposited him. Dr. Harrelson freed himself, but could not survive his injuries and a night in the cold, the Colorado Avalanche Information Center found.

These terrible tragedies are reminders to be safe and also, sadly, that sometimes, tragedy strikes no matter what you do. Our profound condolences go out to everyone affected by these two deaths.
