Get out there and do something ...

Sometimes when I'm out and about, I'll overhear someone make a comment about how there's seldom much to do in Montrose, how they would like to have more options when they get a hankering to go out on the town. It typically sounds less like a complaint and more like a wistful observation.

While Montrose isn't exactly a bustling metropolis, there is usually something going on. Take this weekend for example, you've got a couple of interesting options ...

Running from Feb. 7 to 11, Magic Circle Players will offer audiences a dose of movie magic on stage with "My Funny Valentine on the Silver Screen." An original show written and directed by Lisa Rediger, this play takes audiences through the decades, from the first "talkies" or talking pictures, to the era of Disney and Pixar. You can find out more and read our story about the production here.

And tomorrow night (Feb. 9), Nashville duo Goldpine will play their brand of "aggressive Americana" at Bluecorn. A few weeks ago they were singing the "National Anthem" at a Kansas City Chiefs game and now they're playing Montrose. Nice. Our reporter, Kylea, spoke with the nice folks in Goldpine — Ben and Kassie Wilson — this week to get a feel for what people can expect when they hit the stage at Bluecorn; you can read her story here.

If you're so inclined this weekend, get out there and find something to do — supporting cool events is how you keep'em happening.

Oh, and speaking of cool events ... the Montrose Daily Press is hosting the 5 Point Adventure Film Festival On the Road in a couple of weeks. We'll be letting you know more about this soon, but you can check it out at the link below.

When The Daily Bread moved out of its longtime space on the corner of Main Street and Cascade Avenue last year, a pocket of potential opened up in downtown Montrose. The property is being eyed for a multi-faceted food-and-beverage business and this week the Montrose City Council began discussing potentially kicking in some funds towards the project via the city's commercial kitchen grant application — which opened up an interesting discussion on the local restaurant scene and how much public money Montrose should be investing in it.
