The mountains are blooming When the snow melts and the sun comes out, you can be sure it's time to start looking for wildflowers. Whether you're on the trails or in your own neighborhood, the Western Slope is blooming, and there's hundreds if not thousands of flower species to be seen. Higher up the columbines are coming in, while there's plenty to be seen at lower elevations as well. Last weekend I headed up to the Gunnison National Forest for an easy hike, and spotted plenty of flowers along the way. We did a loop called Three Lakes Trail, and had a blast jumping in the water and looking at all the flowers. We were inspire to hike in this area by the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, which kicked off last weekend and will continue through Sunday. It offers a range of event from hikes to photography workshops, which we covered in a recent outdoor section, but there's plenty of hiking to be done on your own.
Speaking of wildflowers, next week I'll be writing about a program to distribute seed packets across the state for flowers that are pollinator-friendly. These packets are available at local libraries and little free libraries across Colorado, and include a mix of wildflowers that bees and butterflies love that will bloom all over the state. But, if the heat has you wanting to jump in the water instead of hitting the trail, another free option we'd like to highlight is Montrose Surf and Cycle's Wednesday Night surf clinics. These start at 6 p.m. at the river, and will take place the next two Wednesdays in July to teach the basics o river surfing. See ya there! Kylea from the newsroom QUICK LINKS |
