Dolores Canyon Monument-Lite?

For a while now, a collective of conservation groups have pushed for designating the Dolores River Canyon a national monument. For just as long, you have had pushback, vocal and organized, from nearby residents as well as local government officials.

And now Montrose and Mesa counties have put together a proposal to counter the existing concept, one that encompasses much less than the 400,000 acres currently on the table for consideration.

"My belief is beauty and utility can coexist in this proposal," said Montrose County Commissioner Sue Hansen.

But this counter proposal — which seeks to protect around 30,000 acress — isn't impressing those pushing for the larger monument area.

"While I am glad to see Mesa and Montrose counties come to the table and acknowledge that the Dolores need permanent protections, I'm disappointed that their NCA proposal fails to protect so much of what is special about the Dolores River Canyon country," said Scott Braden, director of Colorado Wildlands Project.

You can check out Katharhynn's story detailing this new counter proposal here: A different view — Draft NCA map counters Dolores Canyon monument proposal; Montrose and Mesa counties seek feedback — and draw pushback
