Just wrong There's no need to mince words about what happened Saturday in Pennsylvania. A 20-year-old man, motive unknown, somehow got a clear shot at former President Donald Trump during his rally. By his own account, a bullet ripped into Trump's ear, wounding him. The killer also murdered an innocent rally goer, identified as firefighter Corey Compertaore, who, according to Pennsylvania gov. Josh Shapiro, shielded his family. The shooter was, in Secret Service parlance, "neutralized" — killed. We now face a national reckoning. About violence. About political rhetoric. About division. Or, more accurately, we are now finally admitting that there is a reckoning to be had. That's all of us, not just one party or another, one person or another. In the next days and weeks, the temptation will be great to seek confirmation bias and embrace whatever theory of your choice is floating free in the flotsam and jetsam that passes as discourse on social media. Anyone is free to believe what they please, of course. I'm just hopeful most of us will remember believing random theories is part of what brought us to this point. As a final note, the initial story we published online Saturday has been updated with the most current one as of this afternoon. You can read it here. Katharhynn, from the newsroom, unswervingly condemning the violence in Pennsylvania. |
